The best are offered by St. Croix Safari Tours (tel. 340/773-6700) in a 25-passenger open-air bus tour run by a hip tour guide who knows all about the history of the island. Tours crisscross the island with stops at former plantation houses, historic Frederiksted, the Salt River landfall of Columbus, and a drive through the "rain forest," with a stop for lunch. There are plenty of photo ops. The cost of the tour is $38 per person including admission fees to the botanical gardens, rum factory, and museum.
